Histories and Haunts was established in 2001 by local author, actor and historian, Al Chewning. Al is a retired Virginia Beach firefighter with a degree in history and a love for teaching and he combines the two in a way that is both entertaining and educational (click on the “ghost walks” tab for more information). Al's newest book, Haunted Virginia Beach, references more than 40 spirits that reportedly haunt the resort city. The information was obtained from old newspapers, personal interviews and his own spectral encounters.This book and his other Virginia beach book, Virginia Beach in Vintage Postcards, is available in bookstores, gift shops and in our on-line store. Al's first book, The Approaching Storm; German U-boats off the Virginia Coast in WWII, was published in 1994 and is no longer in print. Al has also written articles for several newspapers and magazines, including Virginia Cavalcade. He has appeared on television in episodes of “Movie of the Week”, “Danger Zone”, “The Prosecutors”, “Diagnosis Unknown”, “New Detectives”, “FBI Files”, “Hauntings”, and “Physic Investigations”. Al serves on
the Board of Advisors at the
Old Coast Guard Station Museum in Virginia
Beach and as an investigator for Regional
Investigators of the Paranormal
(R.I.P.). He is a member
of the Virginia Beach/Princess
Anne County
Historical Society and the
Association
for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities
(APVA). Al is also listed in the National
Registry of Living Historians and does
programs for the National Park
Service and for numerous
